What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the ten: an accountant, an apprentice, a clerk, a helper, an operator and a painter, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (4), West End (2), Fairview, Kitsilano and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Edith M Leask at 486 East 12th Avenue, an operator at D Paterson Glove. The 1940 name section lists Jean S Leask at 792 East 15th Avenue, widow of W. In 1940 the directory lists E Leask at 272 East 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Elvin Leask there as the householder, a painter.
In 1940 the directory lists W J Leask at 50 East 56th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William J Leask there as the householder, a car cleaner at the BC Electric Railway, with William J Leask Jr, a helper at Brandram-Henderson, and Jane M Leask, an apprentice for Mayfair Cafe. The 1940 name section lists William Leask at 1043 East 8th Avenue, a paper maker. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Leask at 1348 Robson Street, a clerk at Kirkland & Rose.
The 1940 name section lists James I Leask at 1537 Robson Street, an accountant. The 1940 name section lists Mary McP Leask at 1596 West 14th Avenue, a stenographer. In 1940 the directory lists J R Leask at 3555 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John R Leask there as the householder, a school teacher.
Today
486 East 12th, 792 East 15th, 1348 Robson and 3555 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 272 East 4th (1995), 50 East 56th (2019) and 1596 West 14th (2000) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1043 East 8th and 1537 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
