The Le Clairs

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at seven addresses

The directories print 15 people named Le Clair at seven addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spellings Leclair and LeClair. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Le Clairs at 3208 Ash in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 15: a saleswoman (2), a conductor, a dancer, a fireman, a helper and a longshoreman, among others. Two of them worked for BC Fir.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, South Cambie and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F X LeClair at 3208 Ash Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Francis X Le Clair there as the householder, a swamper at BC Fir, with J Lawrence Le Clair, a helper at BC Fir, M Anna Le Clair, and Mary J Le Clair, an operator at Original Dress. The 1940 name section lists Eileen Le Clair at 912 Broughton Street, a saleswoman at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Dorothy Le Clair at 1156 East 14th Avenue, a presser at R Stevens Tri-Cleaning.

In 1940 the directory lists J N Le Clair at 3900 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists Joseph N Le Clair there as the householder, a millworker. In 1940 the directory lists A L Le Clair at 4474 Rupert Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Adelard L Le Clair there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver, with Joseph N Le Clair, and Lorraine E Le Clair, a dancer.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs F Leclair at 2245 Trafalgar Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Flora Le Clair there as the householder, with Angus E Le Clair, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, Annie L Le Clair, a saleswoman at Kresges, and John J Le Clair, a waiter. In 1940 the directory lists A H Le Clair at 1487 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Albert H Le Clair there as the householder, a longshoreman.

Today

3208 Ash, 3900 Quebec and 2245 Trafalgar still have their buildings from before 1946; 1156 East 14th (2014) and 4474 Rupert (1978) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 912 Broughton and 1487 West 15th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
