The Lawries

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at eight addresses

The directories print eleven people named Lawrie at eight addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Lawries at 2779 West 13th in 1940.

Where the Lawries lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: an assistant electrician, a conductor, a driver, a laborer, a maid and a messenger, among others. Two of them worked for CP Express. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Shaughnessy and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs V I Lawrie at 1114 Davie Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Viola I Lawrie there as the householder, widow of T. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Lawrie at 743 East 14th Avenue, retired. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Lawrie at 1336 Granville Street.

The 1940 name section lists Jean Lawrie at 1558 Nanton Avenue, a maid for Dr W L Graham. J B Lawrie is listed at 2708 Oxford Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John B Lawrie there as the householder, an assistant electrician at the Vancouver General Hospital.

J Lawrie is listed at 3716 Slocan Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists James Lawrie there as the householder, an elevator mechanic at the Vancouver General Hospital, with James Lawrie Jr, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, and Robert Lawrie, a laborer. P W Lawrie is listed at 2779 West 13th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Peter W Lawrie there as the householder, a messenger at CP Express, with Frank D Lawrie, a warehouseman at CP Express, and Margaret Lawrie.

The 1940 name section lists Jack Lawrie at 610 West 16th Avenue, a driver at Fraser Transfer.

Today

743 East 14th, 2708 Oxford and 2779 West 13th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1114 Davie, 1336 Granville, 1558 Nanton, 3716 Slocan and 610 West 16th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
