The Latimers

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at eleven addresses

The directories print 15 people named Latimer at eleven addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Latimers at 4204 Miller in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a building contractor, a clerk, an inspector, a machinist, a president and a proprietor, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Kitsilano (2), West End (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C Latimer at 2110 East 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Clif Latimer there as the householder, an inspector at the Canadian Government. In 1940 the directory lists W E Latimer at 239 East 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William E Latimer there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Margaret Latimer at 876 Granville Street, a waitress at Ye Olde English Fish & Chips. The 1940 name section lists Bertrand W Latimer at 317 Homer Street, a building contractor. In 1940 the directory lists R G N Latimer at 4204 Miller Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Robert G N Latimer there as the householder, retired, with Doug W Latimer, a machinist, and Ernest G Latimer.

In 1940 the directory lists S H Latimer, rooms to let, at 1109 Nelson Street. The 1940 name section lists Sam H Latimer there, who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists C W Latimer at 1826 Ogden Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. Today

2110 East 3rd, 876 Granville, 2803 West 10th and 50 West Cordova still have their buildings from before 1946; 4204 Miller (2005) and 1860 Robson (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 239 East 6th, 317 Homer, 1109 Nelson, 1826 Ogden and 173 West 18th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
