The Larges

In the city directories 1940 · 17 people at ten addresses

The directories print 17 people named Large at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Larges at 1351 Laurier in 1940.

Where the Larges lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 17: a physician (2), a butcher, a conductor, a dentist, an engineer and a mechanic, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Fairview, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Oakridge, Shaughnessy and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G C Large, a physician, at 718 Granville Street. Dr G C Large is listed at 5909 Hudson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gordon C Large there as the householder, a physician.

Mrs S A Large is listed at 6050 Larch Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Sarah A Large there as the householder, widow of A, with Adelaide A Large. Dr O S Large is listed at 1351 Laurier Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Oliver S Large there as the householder, a physician, with Audrey Z Large, a secretary for Dr G C Large, and M Ruth Large, a student at UBC.

The 1940 name section lists Eric Large at 522 Richards Street. In 1940 the directory lists E Large at 3285 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward Large there as the householder, a mechanic at Begg Motor.

In 1940 the directory lists R M Large at 4754 West 2nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists R Melville Large there as the householder, a dentist, with F Margaret Large, a school teacher, and Kelvin D M Large, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists H Large at 1653 West 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harry Large there as the householder, a butcher at Pacific Meat, with Thomas S Large, an engineer at Aitken Tug & Barge.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Noreen Large at 60 West Broadway, who worked for B Carlson. R M Large, a dentist, is listed at 925 West Georgia Street in 1940. In 1940 the listing there is O S Large, a physician.

Today

6050 Larch and 4754 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 5909 Hudson (1988), 1351 Laurier (2014) and 3285 West 12th (2014) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 718 Granville, 522 Richards, 1653 West 5th, 60 West Broadway and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
