What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 14: a proprietor (2), an employee, a fireman, a millworker, a nurse and a sign painter, among others. Three of them worked for A C Lambe & Co. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Betty E Lambe at 2719 Alder Street, of Rental Bureau, with Rudolph Lambe, a timekeeper at the Vancouver Iron Works. Miss M Lambie is listed at 1420 Barclay Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary Lambie there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists William G Lambe at 358 East 32nd Avenue, a millworker at BC Plywoods.

In 1940 the directory lists P R Lambie at 779 East King Edward Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Perrie R Lambie there as the householder, proprietor of Central Meat Market, with Vera M Lambie. In 1940 the directory lists A C Lambe at 3487 Vanness Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Austin C Lambe there as the householder, proprietor of A C Lambe & Co, with Alice J Lambe, a stenographer at A C Lambe & Co, and William H Lambe, who worked for A C Lambe & Co. The 1940 name section lists Miss V Lambe at 446 West 13th Avenue, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital.

Today

779 East King Edward, 2124 Prince Edward, 446 West 13th and 2990 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 358 East 32nd (1994) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2719 Alder, 1420 Barclay and 3487 Vanness, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
