What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: a painter (2), an apprentice, a branch manager, a delivery, a maid and a mason, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M J Keller at 2271 East 38th Avenue. B Keller is listed at 1721 Franklin Street in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Balser Keller there as the householder, a painter.
W Keller is listed at 1815 Main Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Walter Keller there as the householder, a mason, with Lucy M Keller. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Keller at 1530 West 35th Avenue, a maid for C D Anderson.
In 1940 the directory lists F F Keller at 3737 West 38th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Forest S Keller there as the householder, a watchman at Nelsons Laundries, with D Lloyd Keller, an apprentice at Owl Drug, and E Leslie Keller, a delivery at Vincent Grocery. In 1940 the directory lists C J Keller at 1588 West 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Cornelius J Keller there as the householder, a branch manager at North American Life, with Margaret I L Keller, a student, and Neil W Keller, a student at UBC.
In 1940 the directory lists W H Keller at 2448 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. C R Keller is listed at 4560 Windsor Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists C Robert Keller there as the householder, a painter.
Today
1530 West 35th, 3737 West 38th, 1588 West 49th and 4560 Windsor still have their buildings from before 1946; 2271 East 38th (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1721 Franklin, 1815 Main and 2448 West 5th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
