Where the Jacobsens lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: a roofer (3), a fisherman (2), a logger, a packer and a sander. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (3), Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Kitsilano and Oakridge. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists P Jacobsen at 3028 Commercial Drive. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Christine J Jacobsen at 1206 East 11th Avenue, widow of F. The 1940 name section lists Hans Jacobsen at 378 East 6th Avenue, a logger. The 1940 name section lists H N Jacobsen at 119 East Cordova Street.

In 1940 the directory lists T Jacobsen at 828 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Thor Jacobsen there as the householder, a fisherman, with Tarleif Jacobsen, a fisherman, and Mary Jacobsen. The 1940 name section lists John Jacobsen at 1266 Frances Street, a sander at Hammonds. The 1940 name section lists Harvey Jacobsen at 612 Homer Street, a packer at Woodward's.

In 1940 the directory lists M Jacobsen at 1232 Napier Street. The 1940 name section lists Martin Jacobsen there as the householder, a fisherman. In 1940 the directory lists L O Jacobsen at 6145 Ontario Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Lewis O Jacobsen there as the householder, a roofer, with Harold T Jacobsen, a roofer.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs I Jacobsen at 2375 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ingeborg Jacobsen there as the householder, with Elizabeth Jacobsen, who worked for Nelsons Laundries. The 1940 name section lists Edward Jacobsen at 3026 Woodland Drive, a roofer.

Today

6145 Ontario still has its building from before 1946, dated 1927 by the City's record; 1206 East 11th (1986) and 119 East Cordova (1987) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3028 Commercial Drive, 828 East Pender, 1266 Frances, 612 Homer, 1232 Napier, 2375 West 7th and 3026 Woodland Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 378 East 6th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under J. Want a name removed? Tell us.
