The Ironsides

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses

The directories print twelve people named Ironside at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Ironsides at 55 East 15th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the twelve: an assistant factory inspector, a cashier, a clerk, a driver, a proprietor and a waiter. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists E O Ironside at 3791 Blenheim Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ernest O Ironside there as the householder, a clerk at the Post Office. The 1940 name section lists James L Ironside at 2249 East 10th Avenue as the householder, a waiter at the Vancouver Hotel Beer Parlor.

W F Ironside is listed at 55 East 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William F Ironside there as the householder, an assistant factory inspector at the BC Government, with Cath J Ironside, and Henrietta L Ironside, a student. The 1940 name section lists Leslie Ironside at 1442 Kingsway, a driver for W C Arnett.

In 1940 the directory lists J G Ironside at 3740 Lanark Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James G Ironside there as the householder, proprietor of J G Ironside Co, with J Gordon Ironside, a student, and Violet D Ironside, a cashier at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J Ironside, rooms to let, at 1771 Nelson Street. The 1940 name section lists Josephine Ironside there, a widow, with Alexandria Ironside.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Ironside at 2521 West 1st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Annie Ironside there as the householder, with Annie Ironside.

Today

3791 Blenheim, 2249 East 10th and 3740 Lanark still have their buildings from before 1946; 1771 Nelson (1990) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 55 East 15th, 1442 Kingsway and 2521 West 1st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under I. Want a name removed? Tell us.
