The Horns

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at twelve addresses

The directories print 15 people named Horn at twelve addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Horns at 2524 Balsam in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: an accountant, a clerk, a freight hand, an insurance agent, a manager and an on active service, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Fairview (2), Kitsilano (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J J Horn at 2524 Balsam Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James J Horn there as the householder, retired, with Marion J Horn, and Patricia H Horn, a student at UBC. The 1940 name section lists John Horn at 1756 Comox Street, with Martha R Horn, a clerk at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Sarah A Horn at 5655 Fleming Street, widow of J.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss H G Horn, a masseuse, at 679 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Cath H Horn at 1360 Jervis Street, a physician instructor at the BC Government. In 1940 the directory lists A D Horn at 2661 Oxford Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur D Horn there as the householder, a warehouseman.

In 1940 the directory lists J Horn at 1141 Pacific Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists James Horn there as the householder, a freight hand at the CPR. In 1940 the directory lists F H Horn at 2834 Pine Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Franklin H Horn there as the householder, an insurance agent.

In 1940 the directory lists F S Horn at 1396 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists F Sutherland Horn there as the householder, an accountant. In 1940 the directory lists D A Horn at 10 West 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists David A Horn there as the householder, on active service.

In 1940 the directory lists M G Horn at 2874 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Morton G Horn there as the householder, a manager at McGeachie & Holdsworth. In 1940 the directory lists F H Horn, in insurance, at 541 West Georgia Street.

Today

2661 Oxford, 1396 West 11th and 2874 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946; 5655 Fleming (2000) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2524 Balsam, 1756 Comox, 679 Granville, 1360 Jervis, 1141 Pacific, 2834 Pine, 10 West 4th and 541 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
