The directories print twelve people named Hopwood at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Hopwoods at 943 East 63rd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: an assistant chief operator, a clerk, a dairyman, a freight hand, a logger and a machinist tender, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands (2), Kitsilano, Marpole, Mount Pleasant and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frank Hopwood at 445 Abbott Street, a secretary at the Newspaper Club of Vancouver. H Hopwood is listed at 943 East 63rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harry Hopwood there as the householder, a freight hand at the CPR, with E Roy Hopwood, a logger, and J Wayne Hopwood, an office boy at Pilkington Bros. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Hopwood at 620 Hamilton Street, a dairyman at Associated Dairies.

In 1940 the directory lists T J Hopwood at 2905 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists Thomas J Hopwood there as the householder, an assistant chief operator. In 1940 the directory lists N W Hopwood at 4074 West 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Norman W Hopwood there as the householder, a machinist tender at Canada Roof Products, with Mrs Anne Hopwood.

In 1940 the directory lists D W Hopwood at 3108 West 37th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Dennis W Hopwood there as the householder, a clerk at Gault Bros. In 1940 the directory lists W Hopwood at 283 West 63rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Hopwood there as the householder, retired, with Victor G D Hopwood, a student at UBC.

The 1940 name section lists James W Hopwood at 2080 Whyte Avenue, a salesman at the Vacuum Cleaner Sales & Service.

Today

4074 West 19th and 3108 West 37th still have their buildings from before 1946; 943 East 63rd (2016), 283 West 63rd (1959) and 2080 Whyte (1990) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 445 Abbott, 620 Hamilton and 2905 Quebec, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
