What they did

The name section prints a trade for 13 of the 17: a clerk (3), a comptroller operator, a driver, an examiner, a forewoman and a laborer, among others. Two of them worked for Gordon Campbell. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Victoria-Fraserview (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A W Hoare at 4093 Dumfries Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur W Hoare there as the householder, a salesman, with E Joyce Hoare, a clerk at the Hudson's Bay Company, Florence C Hoare, a clerk at London & Lancashire Insurance, Louise M Hoare, a comptroller operator, and Phyllis M Hoare, a clerk at H B C. In 1940 the directory lists S Hoare at 2946 East 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Syd Hoare there as the householder, a painter, with Clarice E Hoare, widow of A J.

In 1940 the directory lists T A Hoare at 2020 East 48th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Thomas A Hoare there as the householder, a driver. In 1940 the directory lists V H Hoare, a sawdust dealer, at 2069 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Virgil H Hoare there as the householder, a sawdust dealer, with James E Hoare.

In 1940 the directory lists D Hoare at 5875 Elm Street. The 1940 name section lists Doug Hoare there as the householder, an examiner at the Customs. In 1940 the directory lists Miss M Hoare at 231 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Hoare there as the householder, widow of D, with David F Hoare, a laborer, John C Hoare, a shipper for Gordon Campbell, and Kathleen M Hoare, a forewoman for Gordon Campbell.

In 1940 the directory lists P A Hoare at 920 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Percy A Hoare there as the householder, a police officer at the City of Vancouver. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Elizabeth T Hoare at 2910 West 3rd Avenue.

Today

4093 Dumfries, 5875 Elm, 231 West 14th and 2910 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946, 5875 Elm and 2910 West 3rd on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2946 East 16th (1980), 2020 East 48th (1985) and 2069 East 49th (2005) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 920 West 15th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
