What they did
The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 14: a school teacher (3), an apprentice, a carpenter, a clerk, a nurse and an office manager, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), West End (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W H Hind at 1237 Bidwell Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William H Hind there as the householder, with William K Hind, an office manager. The 1940 name section lists Sarah Hind at 1056 Comox Street, a nurse at the St Paul's Hospital.
G H Hind is listed at 2227 East 37th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George H Hind there as the householder, a school teacher. The 1940 name section lists R E Hind at 426 West 12th Avenue, an apprentice at the Canadian (BC) Telephone.
In 1940 the directory lists Rev T J Hind at 4648 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Rev Thomas J Hind there as the householder, a pastor at the West Point Grey Baptist Church, with Frances R Hind, a school teacher, Ian G Hind, a student, and John R Hind, a school teacher. In 1940 the directory lists H W Hind at 2126 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harry W Hind there as the householder, a carpenter at Canadian National Steamships.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs C Hind at 2260 West 1st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Claire Hind there as the householder, widow of J, with Elizabeth Hind, a saleswoman at Spencer's, John P Hind, a clerk at Imperial Oil, and Margaret E Hind, a stenographer at Holland & Lamprey.
Today
426 West 12th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1912 by the City's record and on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2227 East 37th (2018), 4648 West 12th (2020) and 2126 West 13th (1992) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1237 Bidwell, 1056 Comox and 2260 West 1st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Hinds

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
