The Hills

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses

The directories print twelve people named Hill at seven addresses in 1940, all on West 10th Avenue. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Hills at 1855 West 10th in 1940. The directories print the name on 106 other streets too, all listed on the Hill name's own page.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a cannery manager, a carpenter, a longshoreman, a principal, a stenographer and a traffic manager, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), West Point Grey (2), Fairview and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Lloyd W Hill at 196 West 10th Avenue, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Elma Hill at 1036 West 10th Avenue, a waitress at Heather Tea Shoppe. In 1940 the directory lists R Hill at 1855 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Reginald Hill there as the householder, a cannery manager at BC Packers, with Arthur G Hill, John A Hill, a student, and Kathleen M Hill, a stenographer at D J Smith Equipment.

The 1940 name section lists Lionel J Hill at 2715 West 10th Avenue, a traffic manager at M-W Ltd. Mrs G E Hill is listed at 3035 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Grace E Hill there as the householder, widow of E B L, with E Rowland Hill, a student, and Lawrence McA Hill.

J Hill is listed at 3804 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Hill there as the householder, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists Rev Father Francis W Hill at 4065 West 10th Avenue, a principal at the Our Lady's School.

Today

196 West 10th and 3804 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2715 West 10th (2002) and 3035 West 10th (2013) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1036 West 10th, 1855 West 10th and 4065 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
