The Hickmans

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Hickman at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Hickmans at 457 West 7th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: an apprentice, a carpenter, a clerk, a domestic, a farmer and a freight hand, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), West Point Grey (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The 1940 name section lists J Ernest Hickman there as the householder, a green chainman at Canadian White Pine.

In 1940 the directory lists E Hickman at 3480 Point Grey Road. The 1940 name section lists Edwin Hickman there as the householder, of Kellett & Hickman and proprietor of John Bull Products. In 1940 the directory lists H R Hickman at 457 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Herbert R Hickman there as the householder, a carpenter, with Marjorie A Hickman, a helper at the Vancouver General Hospital, and Phyllis E Hickman, an apprentice at Nelsons Laundries. Today

156 East 8th, 3480 Point Grey Road and 412 Union still have their buildings from before 1946, 156 East 8th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 4188 Miller (1993), 4416 West 10th (1999), 2916 West 36th (1980) and 4485 West 6th (2010) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 457 West 7th and 1547 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
