A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Heywoods
In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at eight addresses
The directories print 13 people named Heywood at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Heywoods at 2855 Cambridge in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a driver, a janitor, a laborer, a page, a proprietor and a school teacher, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (3), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W H Heywood at 2855 Cambridge Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William H Heywood there as the householder, a laborer, with William Heywood, a sign painter, Annie Heywood, a stenographer, and Dennis Heywood, a page at the Canadian Bank of Commerce. In 1940 the directory lists J Heywood at 716 East 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John Heywood there as the householder, a janitor at the City of Vancouver.
In 1940 the directory lists A Heywood, a transfer, at 509 East Broadway; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Arthur Heywood there, a transfer, with Benjamin A Heywood, a driver. The 1940 name section lists E Laurence Heywood at 1656 Pendrell Street.
H Heywood is listed at 715 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry Heywood there as the householder, proprietor of Dufferin Smoke Shop. C R Heywood is listed at 3341 Triumph Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles R Heywood there as the householder, retired, with Caroline G Heywood.
The 1940 name section lists Mrs Clara Heywood at 1849 West 4th Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists R Heywood at 148 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert Heywood there as the householder, retired, with Alma Heywood, a school teacher.
Today
2855 Cambridge and 716 East 11th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 509 East Broadway, 1656 Pendrell, 715 Robson, 3341 Triumph, 1849 West 4th and 148 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
