What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: a cook, a nurse, a physician, a salesman and a stenographer.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Strathcona (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Carl Haig at 429 Campbell Avenue. Dr K J Haig is listed at 1129 Cypress Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Karl J Haig there as the householder, a physician. The 1940 name section lists George Haig at 207 Union Street.
The 1940 name section lists Hilda Haig at 955 West 17th Avenue, a nurse. R F Haig is listed at 3984 West 18th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ron F Haig there as the householder, a salesman for Remington Rand, with Miriam Haig, a stenographer. Mrs A E Haig is listed at 207 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).
In 1940 the directory lists K J Haig, a physician, at 925 West Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Gladys Haig at 2720 Yukon Street, a cook at King's Daughters Restholme.
Today
955 West 17th and 3984 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2720 Yukon (2006) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 429 Campbell, 1129 Cypress, 207 Union, 207 West 20th and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
