The Greggs

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at ten addresses

The directories print 13 people named Gregg at ten addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Greggs at 1235 Beach in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: an agent, a bus boy, a helper, a laborer, a maid and a manager, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Kerrisdale and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Delphine Gregg at 6075 Angus Drive, a maid for H A Getz. Mrs A Gregg is listed at 1235 Beach Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Annie Gregg there as the householder, widow of R, with Eva Gregg, a student, and Roy H Gregg, a bus boy at the Vancouver Hotel.

M D Gregg is listed at 1009 East 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Michael D Gregg there as the householder, a laborer at Canadian White Pine. The 1940 name section lists A Gregg at 42 East Cordova Street. The 1940 name section lists William Gregg at 1390 Granville Street, who worked for the CPR.

G B Gregg is listed at 2210 Vine Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George B Gregg there as the householder, on active service. The 1940 name section lists Charles M Gregg at 3492 West 13th Avenue as the householder, a manager at H F Ritchie & Co & Bovril Co (Canada).

In 1940 the directory lists H H Gregg at 26 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harry H Gregg there as the householder, a salesman. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Thyrza Gregg at 3230 West 2nd Avenue.

H L C Gregg is listed at 3437 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists H L Crawford Gregg there as the householder, an agent for Mutual Life, with J Stuart Gregg, a helper at Western Steel Products.

Today

42 East Cordova, 3492 West 13th, 26 West 14th, 3230 West 2nd and 3437 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 6075 Angus Drive, 1235 Beach, 1009 East 12th, 1390 Granville and 2210 Vine, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
