The Gores

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at ten addresses

The directories print twelve people named Gore at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Gores at 2024 Kitchener in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a director (2), a clerk, a cook, a manager, a proprietor and a stenographer. Two of them worked for Young & Gore Tugboat.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A S Gore at 777 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur S Gore there as the householder, proprietor of Gore Blue Print. In 1940 the directory lists L B Gore at 4775 Connaught Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Lloyd B Gore there as the householder, a director at Young & Gore Tugboat.

In 1940 the directory lists L C Gore at 2235 East 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leslie C Gore there as the householder, a cook at the Union Steamship Company. In 1940 the directory lists F D Gore at 666 East 59th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William J Gore there as the householder, retired, with Edward M Gore, and Nora E Gore, a stenographer at Manufacturers Life. Today

777 Burrard, 4775 Connaught Drive, 2024 Kitchener and 2066 West 13th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2066 West 13th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 5611 Holland (1989) and 1637 Kitchener (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2235 East 12th, 666 East 59th, 743 East Broadway and 204 West 11th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
