What they did

The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 14: a chauffeur, a clerk, a confectioner, a dispenser, a driver and a helper, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Kitsilano and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists S Goodfellow at 659 Cambie Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Stewart Goodfellow there as the householder, retired, with Stewart Goodfellow, a messenger at Ryan's Messengers, and William Goodfellow, a driver at the Broadway Messenger Service. In 1940 the directory lists F T Goodfellow at 364 East 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frederick T Goodfellow there as the householder, a receiver at Crane, with Gwen Goodfellow, a clerk, and Olive Goodfellow, a saleswoman at Woolworths.

The 1940 name section lists Bert Goodfellow at 1344 Nelson Street, a laborer. The 1940 name section lists Leslie S Goodfellow at 1332 Robson Street, a chauffeur at BC Motor Transportation. In 1940 the directory lists A Goodfellow, a confectioner, at 1717 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists Alan Goodfellow there as the householder, a confectioner, with Mrs Laura Goodfellow, a tailoress for C Claman.

In 1940 the directory lists L W Goodfellow at 4994 Walden Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists L Wesley Goodfellow there as the householder, a helper at the Vancouver Hotel, with Arnold G Goodfellow and Vernon Goodfellow. In 1940 the directory lists W Goodfellow at 2756 West 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Goodfellow there as the householder, a dispenser at the Belmont Hotel.

In 1940 the directory lists A Goodfellow at 255 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Archie Goodfellow there as the householder, a painter.

Today

4994 Walden and 2756 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946; 255 West Broadway (2009) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 659 Cambie, 364 East 14th, 1344 Nelson, 1332 Robson and 1717 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
