What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a saleswoman (2), a building contractor, a carpenter, a furrier, a janitor and a maid, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Fairview (2), Mount Pleasant (2), West End (2), Kitsilano, Riley Park and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Frederick at 863 East 12th Avenue, a furrier. The 1940 name section lists Frederick at 1390 Granville Street. In 1940 the directory lists H C Frederick at 2830 Hemlock Street. The 1940 name section lists Howard C Frederick there as the householder, a janitor at the Pacific Coast Fire Building.

The 1940 name section lists Loretta Frederick at 3692 Osler Street, a maid for L W Raley. The 1940 name section lists Inez Frederick at 1555 Robson Street, a saleswoman at Ziegler's Chocolate Shops. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L Frederick at 1568 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Lena Frederick there as the householder, widow of A, with Frederick.

In 1940 the directory lists A Frederick at 2376 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Antonio Frederick there as the householder, a tailor. In 1940 the directory lists J Fridrick, a building contractor, at 80 West 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Fridrick there, a building contractor, with Norman Fridrick, a carpenter for J Fridrick.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Edith H Frederick at 1040 West Georgia Street, a saleswoman at Birks. A Frederick, a tailor, is listed at 615 West Pender Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists A Frederick at 2904 Windsor Street. The 1940 name section lists Aug Frederick there as the householder, retired.

Today

863 East 12th, 2830 Hemlock, 2376 West 14th, 80 West 23rd and 2904 Windsor still have their buildings from before 1946; 1568 West 12th (1981) and 1040 West Georgia (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1390 Granville, 3692 Osler, 1555 Robson and 615 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
