What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 17: a mechanic (2), an attendant, a domestic, an employee, a labeller and a musician, among others. Three of them worked for Inverness Service Station. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (5), West End (3), Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F X Frank at 2120 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists X Frank there as the householder, a salesman. The 1940 name section lists Frank (no first name printed) at 1823 Comox Street.

L Frank is listed at 709 Dunsmuir Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Leonard Frank there as the householder, of L Frank Photos, with Bernard Frank, of L Frank Photos. The 1940 name section lists Y Frank at 249 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Harry L Frank at 137 East Hastings Street, a mechanic.

L Photos Frank is listed at 553 Granville Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Leonard, Photos Frank there. Mrs A Frank is listed at 3561 Inverness Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Annie Frank there as the householder, widow of W, with Everett E Frank, an attendant at the Inverness Service Station, and Harold Frank, a mechanic at the Inverness Service Station.

The 1940 name section lists Evelyn Frank at 2614 Ontario Street, a labeller at the Pacific Mills. The 1940 name section lists Helen B Frank at 1201 Pendrell Street, who worked for Gordon & Belyea. The 1940 name section lists Margaret H Frank at 1419 Pendrell Street, a stenographer at C P Express.

In 1940 the directory lists P Franke at 1675 Venables Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Peter Franke there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists Agnes Frank at 900 West Georgia Street, a domestic at the Vancouver Hotel. The 1940 name section lists William Frank at 609 West Pender Street, a musician.

Today

249 East Georgia, 137 East Hastings, 3561 Inverness, 1419 Pendrell and 900 West Georgia still have their buildings from before 1946, 1419 Pendrell and 900 West Georgia on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1675 Venables (1960) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2120 Blenheim, 1823 Comox, 709 Dunsmuir, 553 Granville, 2614 Ontario, 1201 Pendrell and 609 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
