What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 13: an engineer (2), a circulation, a laborer, a lather, a longshoreman and a master mariner, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A B Finley at 725 East 33rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists A Bickford Finley there as the householder, a lather. In 1940 the directory lists W E Finley at 2507 East 51st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William E Finley there as the householder, an engineer.

The 1940 name section lists Gerald W Finley at 1642 Pendrell Street, a circulation at the Sun. G L Finley is listed at 4942 Ruby Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George L Finley there as the householder, a longshoreman.

I C Finley is listed at 1455 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ira C Finley there as the householder, proprietor of the Henry Sheet Metal Works, with W Roy Finley, a sheet metal worker. Miss E Finley is listed at 1125 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edith E Finley there as the householder, a school teacher, with Susan Finley, widow of M T.

K R Finley is listed at 3125 West 5th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ken R Finley there as the householder, an engineer at Capilano Breweries, with Sara A Finley, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists John Finley at 1595 West 7th Avenue, a master mariner. The 1940 name section lists H Finley at 175 West Broadway, a laborer at Overseas Wood Products.

Today

4942 Ruby still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 3125 West 5th (1990) and 175 West Broadway (1963) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 725 East 33rd, 2507 East 51st, 1642 Pendrell, 1455 West 13th, 1125 West 14th and 1595 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
