The Fannings

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses

The directories print twelve people named Fanning at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: five Fannings at 100 West 13th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the twelve: a fisherman (2), a clerk, an electrician, a farmer, a miner and a proprietor, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West Point Grey (2), Fairview, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H W Fanning at 403 East 56th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harold W Fanning there as the householder, a school teacher. The 1940 name section lists Gerald S Fanning at 1036 Haro Street, an electrician at Boultbee.

A R Fanning is listed at 2961 Spruce Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert R Fanning there as the householder, proprietor of Saint Block, with Edwin Fanning, a farmer. M R Fanning is listed at 100 West 13th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Manford R Fanning there, a fisherman, with Arnold Fanning, a miner, Audrey Fanning, Leonard R Fanning, and Manford J E Fanning, a fisherman.

L Fanning is listed at 4133 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Lawrence Fanning there as the householder, a salesman at the Hudson's Bay Company. T Fanning is listed at 2910 West 5th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Fanning there as the householder, a shipper.

The 1940 name section lists George Fanning at 4501 West 9th Avenue, a clerk.

Today

100 West 13th, 2910 West 5th and 4501 West 9th still have their buildings from before 1946; 403 East 56th (1960) and 4133 West 15th (1992) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1036 Haro and 2961 Spruce, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
