Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists D H Dougan at 2592 East 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists David H Dougan there as the householder, with David Dougan, a delivery at Buy-Rite Grocery, Albert Dougan, James H Dougan, a laborer at Overseas Wood Products, and Lawrence Dougan, a laborer at Overseas Wood Products. In 1940 the directory lists R McA Dougan at 7206 Fraser Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Robert McA Dougan there as the householder, retired, with Albert Dougan.
In 1940 the directory lists H H Dougan at 318 Glen Drive. The 1940 name section lists Henry H Dougan there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists H C Dougan at 2665 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists H Clinton Dougan there as the householder, an elevator operator at the Regent Hotel.
In 1940 the directory lists T Dougan at 36 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Dougan there as the householder, a cleaner at Royal Trust. In 1940 the directory lists C B Dougan at 55 West 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clarence B Dougan there as the householder, a logger, with Aileen Dougan, a student, and Doreen H Dougan, a student.
In 1940 the directory lists R H Dougan at 3477 West 40th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert H Dougan there as the householder, who worked for Gordon & Belyea. In 1940 the directory lists C Dougan at 1805 West Georgia Street.
Today
2665 West 13th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1938 by the City's record; 2592 East 28th (1995) and 3477 West 40th (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 7206 Fraser, 36 West 15th, 55 West 16th and 1805 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 318 Glen Drive, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
