A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Dochertys
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses
The directories print ten people named Docherty at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Dochertys at 245 East 12th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a motorman (2), a driver, a longshoreman, a machinist, a mate and a proprietor. Two of them worked for BC Electric Railway.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Docherty at 245 East 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Docherty there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway, with Sam Docherty, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway, and Victor P Docherty. In 1940 the directory lists J Docherty at 811 East 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Docherty there as the householder, a driver.
In 1940 the directory lists C T Docherty at 2511 Grant Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles T Docherty there as the householder, proprietor of Docherty's Cariboo Freight Lines. In 1940 the directory lists R C Docherty at 2333 Trafalgar Street.
G S Docherty is listed at 2568 Trimble Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George S Docherty there as the householder, a mate at Shell Oil. The 1940 name section lists Ron C Docherty at 2333 West 1st Avenue as the householder, a machinist.
In 1940 the directory lists W D Docherty at 3983 West 33rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William D Docherty there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Frank Docherty at 838 West Pender Street, retired.
Today
811 East 12th, 2511 Grant and 2568 Trimble still have their buildings from before 1946; 245 East 12th (1970) and 3983 West 33rd (2017) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2333 Trafalgar, 2333 West 1st and 838 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
