The Dickeys

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Dickey at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Dickeys at 2042 Macdonald in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a dairyman, a lumberman, a manager, a salesman, a stenographer and a typist. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Oakridge and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ada H M Dickey at 1134 Barclay Street, a typist at the Dominion Income Tax. J B Dickey is listed at 5929 Cartier Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John B Dickey there as the householder, a manager at the Canadian Fruit Distributor and Associated Growers of BC.

G Dickey is listed at 1027 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary Dickey there as the householder, widow of G. Mrs M Dickey, a jeweller, is listed at 752 Granville Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists D R Dickey at 2042 Macdonald Street. The 1940 name section lists David R Dickey there as the householder, a lumberman, with Doug E H Dickey, a dairyman at the Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association, and Marion K Dickey, a stenographer. The 1940 name section lists Mary A Dickey at 1837 West 7th Avenue, widow of A W.

Mrs M Dickey is listed at 1455 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Molly Dickey there as the householder, with Ross Dickey, a salesman at Safeway.

Today

5929 Cartier, 1027 East 14th and 2042 Macdonald still have their buildings from before 1946, 2042 Macdonald on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 1134 Barclay, 752 Granville, 1837 West 7th and 1455 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
