A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Deanes

In the city directories 1915–1940 · nine people at ten addresses

The directories print nine people named Deane at ten addresses between 1915 and 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. The same first name and initials follow one family between addresses (inferred); the others share only the surname, so we can't tell if they're one family.

Where the Deanes lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below; a gold thread joins the addresses of a person we follow from one to the next, by the same first name and initials (inferred). One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: an accountant, an apprentice, a candler, a delicatessen and a grocer and meats.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), West End (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Dunbar-Southlands and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1915 the directory lists Thomas Deane at 2343 Yew Street. In 1940 T Deane is listed at 2758 West 8th Avenue (inferred): the same name and initials as at 2343 Yew in 1915, so most likely the same person. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas Deane there as the householder, in grocer and meats.

P Deane is listed at 1096 Comox Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Peter B Deane there as the householder, a delicatessen. N V Deane is listed at 2208 Grant Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Noel V Deane there as the householder, a candler for W Scott.

The 1940 name section lists Deane at 1175 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Maurice G Deane at 1949 Quebec Street, an apprentice at Kumfort Furnace. P B Deane, a delicatessen, is listed at 1106 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Roy E Deane at 1495 Venables Street, a student at UBC.

J F Deane is listed at 3496 West 30th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists J Frank Deane there as the householder, an accountant. T Deane, in grocer and meats, is listed at 2704 West 4th Avenue in 1940.

Today

2343 Yew and 3496 West 30th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2208 Grant (1992), 1175 Haro (1967) and 1495 Venables (1968) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1096 Comox, 1949 Quebec, 1106 Robson, 2704 West 4th and 2758 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
