Where the Conrads lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 14: a salesman (2), a cleaner, a clerk, a driver, an engineer and a gym instructor, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, South Cambie, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Helen Conrad at 1135 Beach Avenue, a gym instructor, with Robert S Conrad, a lumber accountant. S A Conrad is listed at 950 East 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Sam A Conrad there as the householder, an engineer at Pacific Coyle Navigation, with Ethel A Conrad, a stenographer. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Freda Conrad at 431 East Pender Street.

The 1940 name section lists Emalyn B Conrad at 969 Jervis Street, an office manager at King Agencies. The 1940 name section lists Karl Conrad at 1045 Seymour Street, a driver. In 1940 the directory lists D A Conrad at 1979 Waterloo Street. The 1940 name section lists Doug A Conrad there as the householder, a cleaner at the Vancouver Hotel, with Emaline A C Conrad, widow of C C.

In 1940 the directory lists C A Conrad at 4433 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Clif A Conrad there as the householder, a salesman at Coast Products. In 1940 the directory lists J Conrad at 864 West 18th Avenue.

C W Conrad is listed at 3750 West 21st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Conrad there as the householder, a clerk at Canada Perm Mortgage. The 1940 name section lists Edward Conrad at 2188 West 44th Avenue, a salesman at Hunter-Henderson Paint, with Martha Conrad, a saleswoman at Woodward's.

Today

950 East 12th, 431 East Pender and 864 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946; 969 Jervis (1980), 1045 Seymour (1965), 1979 Waterloo (2016), 4433 West 15th (1986) and 3750 West 21st (1987) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1135 Beach and 2188 West 44th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
