The Codes

In the city directories 1940 · 14 people at ten addresses

The directories print 14 people named Code at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Codes at 2120 East 2nd in 1940.

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 14: a plumber (2), a stenographer (2), a director, an employee, an engineer and a painter, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Killarney, Kitsilano, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W M Code at 4070 Commercial Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William M Code there as the householder, an engineer. In 1940 the directory lists L B Code at 2120 East 2nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Lorne B Code there as the householder, a school teacher, with Clif R Code, a painter, and Howard C Code, of C & J Service Station.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M E Code at 565 East 47th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Margaret E Code there as the householder, widow of E G. In 1940 the directory lists S Code, a plumber, at 2153 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists Stan Code there, a plumber.

In 1940 the directory lists G Code at 2155 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists George Code there as the householder, a plumber for S Code. The 1940 name section lists Welland Code at 1160 Robson Street, who worked for Pacific Garage.

J A Code is listed at 6286 Tyne Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph A Code there as the householder, retired. W N Code is listed at 2196 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists W Norman Code there as the householder, a director at Progress Publishing, with Beryl M Code, a stenographer, and Wilma J Code, a stenographer at Crofton Export.

S W Code, a parking, is listed at 496 West Cordova Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Norman Code at 1140 West Pender Street, a salesman at M-W Ltd.

Today

2120 East 2nd and 565 East 47th still have their buildings from before 1946; 4070 Commercial (2003), 1160 Robson (1957) and 1140 West Pender (1984) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2153 Main, 2155 Main, 6286 Tyne, 2196 West 8th and 496 West Cordova, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
