The Clendennings

In the city directories 1905–1940 · 14 people at ten addresses

The directories print 14 people named Clendenning at ten addresses between 1905 and 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spellings Clandening, Clendening and Clandenning. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Clendennings at 3003 West 3rd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 14: a clerk (3), a maintenanceman, a president, a secretary and a stenographer. Two of them worked for Empire Ship. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Kitsilano (2), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Oakridge and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In August 1902 John Clandening took out the permit to build a frame house at 620 Keefer Street (inferred): the register's number for it is uncertain, but the owner's name is the one the directories list there. From 1905 to 1925 the directory lists John A. Clandenning, a foreman, at 620 Keefer Street (printed Clandenning in 1905 and Clandening in 1915 and 1925); the 1915 line is placed here by inference (printed “520”, its place in the street's order makes it 620) (inferred). By 1935 it is M A Clendenning; the 1935 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

In 1940 the directory lists E J Clendening at 950 Bidwell Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Eric J Clendening there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. In 1940 the directory lists F S Clendenning at 3532 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section lists Frederick S Clendenning there as the householder, a clerk at Empire Ship.

In 1940 the directory lists C H Clendenning at 1091 Broughton Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles H Clendenning there as the householder, with Charles H Clendenning Jr, a secretary at Fuel Conserving Co Ltd. The 1940 name section lists Marie Clendening at 2616 Clark Drive, widow of G. The 1940 name section lists Albert Clandenning at 1516 East 10th Avenue, a student.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A M Clendenning at 1575 Vine Street. The 1940 name section lists Alice M Clendenning there as the householder, widow of F H. In 1940 the directory lists W G Clendening at 3003 West 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Wilfred G Clendening there as the householder, with Billy C Clendening, a stenographer, Monty M Clendening, a clerk at Birks-Crawford, and Roy S Clendening, a maintenanceman at Neon Products.

In 1940 the directory lists F H Clendenning at 1432 West 45th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick H Clendenning there as the householder, a president at Empire Ship. The 1940 name section lists Helen Clendinning at 844 West Broadway.

Today

620 Keefer, 3532 Blenheim, 1091 Broughton, 1516 East 10th, 3003 West 3rd and 1432 West 45th still have their buildings from before 1946, 620 Keefer on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 950 Bidwell (1991) and 2616 Clark Drive (1974) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1575 Vine and 844 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
