The Cleggs

In the city directories 1940 · 16 people at eleven addresses

The directories print 16 people named Clegg at eleven addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Cleggs at 2808 West 35th in 1940.

Where the Cleggs lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 16: an embalmer (2), a chief steward, a contract bridge teacher, an elevator operator, a machinist and a porter, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Arbutus Ridge (2), Downtown (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, South Cambie and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In May 1928 Arthur Clegg took out the permit to build a house at 2756 Cambridge Street. In 1940 the directory lists A Clegg at 2756 Cambridge Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur Clegg there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists E J Clegg at 2033 Comox Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edith J Clegg there as the householder, widow of E B. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J M Clegg at 709 Dunsmuir Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Jessie M Clegg there as the householder, a contract bridge teacher.

In 1940 the directory lists H V Clegg at 175 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Herbert V Clegg there as the householder, an embalmer at Center & Hanna. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J M Clegg at 1154 Gilford Street.

J H Clegg is listed at 830 Pacific Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists J Herbert Clegg there as the householder, an embalmer at Nunn & Thomson. J Clegg is listed at 784 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Cyril J Clegg there, a machinist at D J Smith Equipment.

The 1940 name section lists Sarah Clegg at 949 West 27th Avenue, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists Cedric Clegg at 2865 West 31st Avenue, a porter. W Clegg is listed at 2808 West 35th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Clegg there as the householder, a chief steward at Taconite Ltd, with Doris M Clegg, Frederick W Clegg, a warehouseman at Home Oil, and Lucy V Clegg, an elevator operator at the Hudson's Bay Company.

The 1940 name section lists Alice E Clegg at 3767 West 6th Avenue, a seamstress for T B Lee.

Today

175 East Broadway, 1154 Gilford, 784 Thurlow and 2808 West 35th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1154 Gilford and 784 Thurlow on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2756 Cambridge (1989) and 2033 Comox (1960) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 709 Dunsmuir, 830 Pacific, 949 West 27th, 2865 West 31st and 3767 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
