What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 14: a stenographer (2), a wiper (2), a clerk, a draftsman, a fitter and a painter, among others. Two of them worked for CPR. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Kitsilano (2), Mount Pleasant, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists S G Claridge at 5272 Chester Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sid G Claridge there as the householder, a wiper at the CPR. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A W Claridge at 1062 East 38th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Annie W Claridge there as the householder, widow of A E, with Gordon A Claridge, a painter.

In 1940 the directory lists J C Coleridge at 721 East 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John C Coleridge there as the householder, a fitter at J Chew Shingle. The 1940 name section lists William Claridge at 1224 East Georgia Street, a repairerman at Forst's.

Mrs M Claridge is listed at 1509 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Matilda Claridge there, with Frank A Claridge, a wiper at the CPR, Geoffrey K Claridge, a clerk at L Dreyfus & Co, Vera M Claridge, a stenographer at Great West Life, and Vivian G Claridge, a stenographer for J A Perdue. C J Clarridge is listed at 2464 Point Grey Road in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles J Clarridge there as the householder, with M Ruth Clarridge, and Reginald C Clarridge, a salesman at Woodward's.

G S Claridge is listed at 3336 West 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists G Stan Claridge there as the householder, a draftsman at Hamilton Bridge.

Today

1062 East 38th and 1224 East Georgia still have their buildings from before 1946, 1224 East Georgia on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 5272 Chester (1969), 2464 Point Grey Road (1958) and 3336 West 11th (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 721 East 7th and 1509 Haro, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
