Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists F Charlesworth at 4916 Chatham Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Fred Charlesworth there as the householder, a shipper at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists E Charlesworth at 5655 Fleming Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Charlesworth there as the householder, a janitor at the CNR, with Ernest Charlesworth Jr, a laborer at Overseas Wood Products, Fred Charlesworth, a driver for A Andresen, and John H Charlesworth, a millworker.
In 1940 the directory lists G H Charlesworth at 4753 Rupert Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George H Charlesworth there as the householder, a department manager at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists H Charlesworth at 3726 West 35th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harry Charlesworth there as the householder, a secretary at BC Teachers Fed.
In 1940 the directory lists N Charlesworth at 45 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Norman Charlesworth there as the householder, a millworker. In 1940 the directory lists P J Charlesworth at 1082 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Percy J Charlesworth there as the householder, an electrician repairerman at the City of Vancouver.
In 1940 the directory lists J W Charlesworth at 2042 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James W Charlesworth there as the householder, a salesman, with Marguerite M Charlesworth. In 1940 the directory lists J Charlesworth at 2137 Yew Street. The 1940 name section lists John Charlesworth there as the householder, a builder.
Today
4916 Chatham still has its building from before 1946, dated 1936 by the City's record; 5655 Fleming (2000), 3726 West 35th (2016) and 1082 West 8th (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 4753 Rupert, 45 West 7th, 2042 West 8th and 2137 Yew, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
