What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 14: an engineer (2), a janitor (2), a clerk, a masseuse, a pressman and a salesman, among others. Two of them worked for Spencer's.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Killarney, Mount Pleasant, Sunset, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J A Card at 1835 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James A Card there as the householder, a service manager at Ford Motor. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H M Card at 2906 Carolina Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Hannah M Card there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Leonard Card at 309 Carrall Street, an engineer. Mrs G Card is listed at 586 East 45th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Georgina Card there as the householder, a masseuse at Spencer's, with Colin G Card, a wrapper at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists D V Card at 575 Hornby Street, a salesman.

In 1940 the directory lists C W Card at 5891 Lincoln Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Charles W Card there as the householder, a janitor at the BC Telephone. In 1940 the directory lists C Y Card at 3708 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles Y Card there as the householder, retired.

The 1940 name section lists Harry J Card at 805 West 16th Avenue, an engineer at Garvin Ice & Fuel, with William A Card, a student. G G Card is listed at 3848 West 17th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gordon G Card there as the householder, a pressman at the Pacific Mills.

W S Card is listed at 1726 West 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William G Card there as the householder, a janitor at Alexandra Neighborhood House. The 1940 name section lists Harold A Card at 1001 West 8th Avenue, a clerk at the CPR.

Today

309 Carrall and 5891 Lincoln still have their buildings from before 1946; 1835 Barclay (1986), 586 East 45th (1987), 3708 West 14th (1983) and 3848 West 17th (2006) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2906 Carolina, 575 Hornby, 805 West 16th, 1726 West 7th and 1001 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
