The Canns

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at ten addresses

The directories print 13 people named Cann at ten addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Canns at 961 Howe in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a salesman (2), a chauffeur, a druggist, an employee, a motorman and an usher, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Fairview (3), Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists S T Cann at 961 Howe Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sid T Cann there as the householder, a chauffeur, with Marjorie F Cann, an usher at the Capitol Theatre, Muriel Cann, and Sid G Cann. In 1940 the directory lists R W Cann at 3216 Renfrew Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ron W Cann there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway.

In 1940 the directory lists H C Cann at 856 Richards Street. The 1940 name section lists Howard C Cann there as the householder, a waiter. The 1940 name section lists H Cann at 1124 Robson Street, who worked for La Fonda.

H Cann is listed at 106 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hector Cann there as the householder, a salesman for Kelly Douglas. Mrs I A Cann is listed at 1090 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ida A Cann there as the householder, widow of H.

J L Cann is listed at 1395 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John L Cann there as the householder, a druggist at Cunningham Drug. F C R Cann is listed at 1717 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists F C Reginald Cann there as the householder, a salesman.

The 1940 name section lists Frances R Cann at 2496 West 7th Avenue, widow of H W. The 1940 name section lists Arthur R Cann at 435 West Pender Street.

Today

1395 West 12th, 2496 West 7th and 435 West Pender still have their buildings from before 1946, 435 West Pender on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1124 Robson (2002), 106 West 12th (1995) and 1717 West 4th (1955) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 961 Howe, 3216 Renfrew, 856 Richards and 1090 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
