Where the Calverts lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the twelve: a chef, a driver, a house wrecker, a mate, a saleswoman and a school inspector. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists D Q Calvert at 4606 Bellevue Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sam Calvert at 722 Broughton Street, a driver at Terminal Cartage. The 1940 name section lists Joy Calvert at 1161 Broughton Street.

A E Calvert is listed at 1784 East 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Calvert there as the householder, a chef. The 1940 name section lists Edward A Calvert at 3371 Findlay Street, a mate. The 1940 name section lists T Calvert at 1516 Powell Street.

The 1940 name section lists Andrew Calvert at 532 Prior Street. The 1940 name section lists Rae Calvert at 3629 West 35th Avenue, widow of F J. S Calvert is listed at 2143 West 36th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam Calvert there as the householder, retired.

G T Calvert is listed at 54 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George T Calvert there as the householder, a house wrecker. F G Calvert is listed at 2485 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Franklin G Calvert there as the householder, a school inspector at the BC Government.

The 1940 name section lists Dorothy Calvert at 1193 West Pender Street, a saleswoman at Mallek's.

Today

4606 Bellevue Drive, 1161 Broughton, 1784 East 13th, 1516 Powell, 532 Prior and 2485 West 7th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1516 Powell on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3629 West 35th (2014) and 2143 West 36th (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 722 Broughton, 3371 Findlay, 54 West 7th and 1193 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
