What they did
The name section prints a trade for four of the 13: an accountant, a logger, a mechanic and a shoe repairer. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary J Burroughs at 2601 Ash Street, widow of J. H A Burroughs is listed at 3185 Clark Drive in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Henry A Burroughs there as the householder, of Cornell & Burroughs.
A G Burroughs is listed at 2261 East 44th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur G Burroughs there as the householder, a shoe repairer. Mrs M E Burroughs is listed at 626 East 48th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Maud E Burroughs there as the householder, widow of H, with Bernard Burroughs.
The 1940 name section lists Frederick Boroughs at 3442 West 11th Avenue, a mechanic at Christie Truck & Car Parts, with Robert Boroughs, a student. In 1940 the directory lists Miss E M Burroughs at 2749 West 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Eva M Burroughs there as the householder, an accountant at Devonshire Ltd, with James S Burroughs, retired. In 1940 the directory lists W P Burroughs at 2230 West 3rd Avenue.
G H V Burroughs is listed at 1787 West 49th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George H V Burroughs there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Dave Burroughs at 21 West Cordova Street, a logger.
Today
3442 West 11th, 2749 West 2nd and 2230 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 3185 Clark Drive (1990), 2261 East 44th (1993) and 626 East 48th (1972) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2601 Ash, 1787 West 49th and 21 West Cordova, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
