What they did
The name section prints a trade for ten of the 15: a stenographer (3), a salesman (2), an assistant, a barber, a bridge tender and a longshoreman, among others. Two of them worked for Turnbull Bros.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (3), Downtown (2), Kitsilano (2), Grandview-Woodland and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists R Brunt at 477 East 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert Brunt there as the householder, a bridge tender at the BC Electric Railway, with Ernest H Brunt, a salesman. In 1940 the directory lists F M Brunt at 724 East 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Francis M Brunt there as the householder, a barber, with Agnes B Brunt, an assistant for M F Keeley, Ellen W Brunt, a stenographer at Turnbull Bros, Gertrude Brunt, a stenographer at the BC Government, and Margaret E Brunt, a stenographer at Turnbull Bros.
The 1940 name section lists Wallace Brunt at 831 Helmcken Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles Brunt at 2212 Oxford Street, a longshoreman. In 1940 the directory lists J C Brunt at 3524 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists John C Brunt there as the householder, a seaman at the Union Steamship Company.
In 1940 the directory lists S W Brunt, in real estate, at 509 Richards Street. The 1940 name section lists Alfred G Brunt at 37 West 11th Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists W H N Brunt at 3540 West 5th Avenue.
T V Brunt is listed at 1925 West 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas V Brunt there as the householder, a salesman at Bearing Supplies House, with John Brunt.
Today
477 East 10th, 3524 Quebec, 509 Richards, 37 West 11th and 3540 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946, 509 Richards and 3540 West 5th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2212 Oxford (1995) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 724 East 15th, 831 Helmcken and 1925 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
