What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a maid (2), a salesman (2), a fuel dealer, a men's clothing and shoes, a millworker and a shoe repairer, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Strathcona and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C Brummitt at 3047 East 29th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Charles Brummitt there as the householder, a salesman for W B Brummitt. In 1940 the directory lists G Brummitt, a fuel dealer, at 288 East 59th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Brummitt there as the householder, a fuel dealer.

The 1940 name section lists Charles Brummitt at 2528 Mackenzie Street, retired. W B Brummitt is listed at 3377 Parker Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William B Brummitt there as the householder, a salesman, with Lillian D Brummitt and Thomas A Brummitt.

H E Brummitt is listed at 306 Vernon Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harold E Brummitt there as the householder, a millworker at Sterling Lumber, with Cyril Brummitt, a shoe repairer for K Parsons. W B Brummitt is listed at 204 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William B Brummitt there as the householder, in men's clothing and shoes, with Vera M Brummitt, a stenographer at Davis Pugh Hossie Lett & Marshall.

The 1940 name section lists Grace Brummitt at 3237 West 27th Avenue, a maid for G W Langdale. The 1940 name section lists Bernice I Brummitt at 3330 West 44th Avenue, a maid for L L McKillop. W B Brummitt, a men's clothing, is listed at 18 West Cordova Street in 1940.

Today

2528 Mackenzie, 204 West 12th and 3237 West 27th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3047 East 29th (2006) and 288 East 59th (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 306 Vernon Drive, 3330 West 44th and 18 West Cordova, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 3377 Parker, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
