What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the ten: a laborer (2), an accountant, a clerk, a driver, a shipper and a sterilizer, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (3), Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C N Broad at 6426 Dunbar Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Charles N Broad there as the householder, an accountant. The 1940 name section lists Henry Broad at 2164 Dundas Street, a shipper at Kydd Bros.

F L S Broad is listed at 7233 Fraser Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frederick L S Broad there as the householder, a driver at McLellan & McCarter, with Mae Broad, a waitress at Sandwich Lunch. H Broad is listed at 2821 Main Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry Broad there as the householder, a laborer at the Vancouver Parks Board.

The 1940 name section lists Charles N Broad at 3239 West 37th Avenue, a clerk at the Canadian Government. In 1940 the directory lists A C Broad at 3539 West 40th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Archer C Broad there as the householder, a superintendent at Canadian Linen.

In 1940 the directory lists F S Broad at 1317 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick S Broad there as the householder, a sterilizer at the Vancouver General Hospital. In 1940 the directory lists T H Broad at 1108 West Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Thomas H Broad there as the householder, a laborer.

The 1940 name section lists Minnie Broad at 1607 Yew Street, widow of P.

Today

6426 Dunbar and 2164 Dundas still have their buildings from before 1946; 7233 Fraser (1997), 3239 West 37th (2006) and 3539 West 40th (1981) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2821 Main, 1317 West 7th, 1108 West Pender and 1607 Yew, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
