The Brandons

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Brandon at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Brandons at 3260 Knight in 1940.

Where the Brandons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eleven: a saleswoman (2), an advertising, a porter and a salesman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Riley Park and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J T S Brandon at 34 East 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James T S Brandon there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists J Q Brandon at 199 East 17th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John Q Brandon there as the householder, a salesman for C J Archer, with Martha J Brandon.

In 1940 the directory lists M Brandon at 387 East 57th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Math Brandon there as the householder, a porter at the Kingston Hotel. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M V Brandon at 1904 Grant Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Marjorie V Brandon there.

In 1940 the directory lists J A Brandon at 3260 Knight Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John A Brandon there as the householder, in advertising, with John A Brandon Jr, Diane I Brandon, a saleswoman, and Gloria S Brandon, a saleswoman. In 1940 the directory lists G F Brandon at 3150 Main Street.

Mrs E M Brandon is listed at 1926 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ethel M Brandon there as the householder, widow of E, with James R Brandon, a student at UBC.

Today

199 East 17th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 387 East 57th (1975) and 3150 Main (1970) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 34 East 11th, 1904 Grant, 3260 Knight and 1926 West 11th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
