What they did

Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Riley Park (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Killarney, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry L Bowyer at 1818 Barclay Street, retired. D J Bowyer is listed at 2070 Blenheim Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Dorian J W Bowyer there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.
R T Bowyer is listed at 295 East 32nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ross T Bowyer there as the householder, a decorator. J Bowyer is listed at 2704 East 4th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joshua Bowyer there as the householder, a president at the Musicians' Union.
T Bowyer is listed at 322 East 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Bowyer there as the householder, a painter. T Bowyer is listed at 4518 Elgin Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Bowyer there as the householder, retired.
A C Bowyer is listed at 5890 Joyce Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred C Bowyer there as the householder, a carpenter at Woodward's. M J Bowyer is listed at 4472 Quebec Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mason J Bowyer there as the householder, a decorator.
The 1940 name section lists Grace E Bowyer at 4436 Welwyn Street, a housekeeper for S F Melville.
Today
2070 Blenheim, 295 East 32nd, 5890 Joyce and 4436 Welwyn still have their buildings from before 1946; 2704 East 4th (1989), 4518 Elgin (1981) and 4472 Quebec (2003) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1818 Barclay and 322 East 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
