The Bookers

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses

The directories print eleven people named Booker at nine addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Bookers at 1742 Alma in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: a carpenter, a clerk, a driver, a druggist, a framer and a mate, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Marpole, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, Strathcona and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J E Booker at 1742 Alma Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John E Booker there as the householder, a druggist at Shoffs' Drugs, with Isabel Booker, and Margaret M Booker, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. In 1940 the directory lists A L Booker at 1795 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert L Booker there as the householder, a driver at Stickland Fuels.

The 1940 name section lists Henry Booker at 1006 Granville Street, proprietor of Irwinton Grocery. A G Booker is listed at 1918 Graveley Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred G Booker there as the householder, a mate at the CNR.

E J Booker, a restaurant, is listed at 434 Main Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edward J Booker there, who ran a restaurant. The 1940 name section lists Arthur E Booker at 2022 Ontario Street, a framer.

In 1940 the directory lists G W Booker at 4333 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists George W Booker there as the householder, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists A Booker at 1841 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert Booker there as the householder, a painter.

The 1940 name section lists Annie Booker at 1107 West 70th Avenue, widow of T.

Today

1742 Alma, 1795 East 49th, 1918 Graveley, 434 Main, 2022 Ontario and 4333 Quebec still have their buildings from before 1946, 1742 Alma on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 1006 Granville, 1841 West 5th and 1107 West 70th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
