What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a saleswoman (2), an electrician, a maid, a manager, a manager and vice-president and a mechanic, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (4), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Elaine E Blanchard at 3111 Adanac Street, a maid for S Maisey. The 1940 name section lists Herbert E Blanchard at 1160 Broughton Street, retired. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs S Blanchard at 117 East 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Sylvia Blanchard there as the householder, widow of W L, with Roy Blanchard.

The 1940 name section lists M J Blanchard at 1110 Nelson Street, a mechanic at Begg Motor. The 1940 name section lists Robert Blanchard at 1722 Nelson Street, a manager at Excelsior Wood Products. In 1940 the directory lists H Blanchard at 4975 Ross Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Henry Blanchard there as the householder, a manager and vice-president at Ind Supplies.

The 1940 name section lists Isabel B Blanchard at 1148 Thurlow Street, a saleswoman at Woolworths. The 1940 name section lists Essie G Blanchard at 2210 Vine Street, a saleswoman at Woodward's. In 1940 the directory lists P Blanchard at 3598 West 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Paul Blanchard there as the householder, proprietor of Pauls Confectionery.

The 1940 name section lists Leslie M Blanchard at 1025 West Pender Street, an electrician at the Burrard Dry Dock.

Today

4975 Ross still has its building from before 1946, dated 1912 by the City's record; 3111 Adanac (2016) and 1160 Broughton (1969) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 117 East 3rd, 1110 Nelson, 1722 Nelson, 1148 Thurlow, 2210 Vine, 3598 West 4th and 1025 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
