What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 14: a saleswoman (2), an accountant, a clerk, a commercial artist, a dressmaker and a nurse, among others. Three of them worked for Spencer's. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Fairview, Mount Pleasant and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Hazel M Bell at 334 West 10th Avenue, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital. D M Bell is listed at 1009 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists David M Bell there as the householder, proprietor of Bell Plumbing, with Ella W Bell, a school teacher.

Mrs D D Bell is listed at 2267 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Doris D Bell there as the householder, widow of J H, with Elaine F Bell, a saleswoman at Spencer's, and Harry T Bell, a clerk at H Disston & Sons. T Bell is listed at 2315 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Bell there as the householder, a salesman.

Mrs G M Bell is listed at 3582 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gladys N Bell there as the householder, widow of A, with Alistain M Bell, a commercial artist, Gladys N Bell, a dressmaker, Jean V Bell, a seamstress at Spencer's, and Marjorie I Bell, a saleswoman at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists Harold M Bell at 4166 West 10th Avenue, an accountant for Ross Whittall.

Today

1009 West 10th, 3582 West 10th and 4166 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1009 West 10th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2267 West 10th (1996) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 334 West 10th and 2315 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
