What they did

The name section prints a trade for three of the seven: a carrier driver, a proprietor and a salesman. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists H Banham at 236 East 12th Avenue. A E Banham is listed at 460 East 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alfred E Banham there as the householder, a carrier driver.

Mrs V Banham is listed at 4004 Kaslo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Virginia Banham there as the householder, widow of A J. Mrs E Banham is listed at 2238 Stephens Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Emma Banham there as the householder, widow of W C.

The 1940 name section lists Frederick W Banham at 646 West 10th Avenue, a salesman at Canadian Bakeries. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L M Banham at 3980 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leota M Banham there as the householder, widow of F L W. The 1940 name section lists Ethel Banham at 763 West Broadway, proprietor of the General Beauty Parlor.

Today

2238 Stephens and 3980 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2238 Stephens on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 460 East 6th (1969) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 236 East 12th, 4004 Kaslo, 646 West 10th and 763 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
