The Averys
In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at twelve addresses
The directories print 15 people named Avery at twelve addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Averys at 2684 Trinity in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 15: a maid (3), a boomman, a cabinetmaker, a cashier, a laborer and a manager, among others. Three are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Mount Pleasant (3), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kitsilano, Marpole and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists M Avery at 2946 Charles Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mervin Avery there as the householder, a boomman at Anderson Bros. The 1940 name section lists E S Avery at 1013 Dunsmuir Street, retired.
E F Avery is listed at 1142 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Edward F Avery there as the householder, a plasterer. The 1940 name section lists Lillian J Avery at 930 East 8th Avenue, widow of C G, with Virginia M Avery, a maid. The 1940 name section lists Herbert G Avery at 8935 Hudson Street, a cabinetmaker at Heather Woodworkers.
The 1940 name section lists Kathleen Avery at 2516 Kitchener Street, a stenographer at Braid's Ltd. The 1940 name section lists Inez Avery at 4505 Langara Avenue, a maid for G N Muir. Mrs M J Avery is listed at 2684 Trinity Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary J Avery there as the householder, widow of G, with Mabel Avery, a cashier at the Province, and Maud Avery, a secretary at the Robin Hood Mills.
Mrs E Avery is listed at 2207 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Emily Avery there as the householder, widow of H. The 1940 name section lists Garnet E Avery at 174 West 12th Avenue, a laborer at Canadian White Pine. The 1940 name section lists Winnifred Avery at 1584 West 12th Avenue, a maid for J D Dunsmuir.
F W Avery is listed at 3414 West King Edward Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Francis W Avery there as the householder, a manager at BC Carbon & Ribbon.
Today
1142 East 14th, 2516 Kitchener, 4505 Langara, 174 West 12th and 3414 West King Edward still have their buildings from before 1946; 2946 Charles (1982), 930 East 8th (1968), 2684 Trinity (1974) and 1584 West 12th (1959) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1013 Dunsmuir, 8935 Hudson and 2207 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Averys
Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Avery name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
