The Ashes

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at ten addresses

The directories print 13 people named Ash at ten addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Ashes at 3541 Fraser in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a helper (2), a maid (2), a bookkeeper, a fireman, a manufacturers agent and a waiter, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Riley Park (2), West Point Grey (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Elsie Ash at 4692 Belmont Avenue, a maid for C R Budd. G E Ash is listed at 435 East 19th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George E Ash there as the householder, a watchmaker.

J Ash is listed at 500 East 5th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James Ash there as the householder, a fireman at Sitka Spruce Lumber. Mrs E Ash is listed at 3541 Fraser Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Ash there as the householder, widow of W, with John Ash, a helper at the CPR, and William L Ash, a helper at the City of Vancouver.

S L Ash is listed at 4746 Lanark Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sid L Ash there as the householder, retired. A Ash, a manufacturers agent, is listed at 448 Seymour Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kath Ash at 4601 West 11th Avenue, a maid for N Campbell.

The 1940 name section lists Edwin W Ash at 2057 West 3rd Avenue, a waiter for Aristocratic Hamburgers. In 1940 the directory lists A Ash at 2153 West 48th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Ash there as the householder, a manufacturers agent, with A Bruce Ash, and L Verona Ash, a bookkeeper at M R Cliff & B C Mills Towing. The 1940 name section lists Paul Ash at 304 West 6th Avenue, of Honest Value Fuels.

Today

435 East 19th and 2153 West 48th still have their buildings from before 1946; 4692 Belmont (1990), 3541 Fraser (1958), 4601 West 11th (1989) and 2057 West 3rd (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 500 East 5th, 4746 Lanark, 448 Seymour and 304 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
