In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at eleven addresses
The directories print 15 people named Andersen at eleven addresses in 1940 in nine of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Andersens at 3420 East 28th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a delivery, an electrician, a laborer, a maid, a mariner and a master mariner, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists H C Andersen at 939 East 11th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Henry C Andersen there as the householder, a master mariner. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A G Andersen at 3420 East 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Annie G Andersen there as the householder, widow of N, with Arnold N Andersen, a delivery at Empire Meat, and Gladys D Andersen, a maid.
In 1940 the directory lists J Andersen at 2139 East 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Julius Andersen there as the householder, a laborer at Greater Vancouver Water District. In 1940 the directory lists E C Andersen at 3203 East 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edward C Andersen there as the householder, on active service.
In 1940 the directory lists C M Andersen at 389 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Christian M Andersen there as the householder, a mariner. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J G Andersen at 1877 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Joyce G Andersen there as the householder.
The 1940 name section lists Poul Andersen at 3213 Main Street, proprietor of Myrtle's Grocery. Miss G Andersen is listed at 720 Richards Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Greta Andersen there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Mary Andersen at 2435 West 13th Avenue, with Rasmus Andersen.
In 1940 the directory lists C Andersen at 3657 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Christian Andersen there as the householder, an electrician at Canadian Pacific Steamships. In 1940 the directory lists H P Andersen, rooms to let, at 1321 West Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked * too.
Today
3203 East 6th, 389 East Broadway, 1877 Haro and 2435 West 13th still have their buildings from before 1946; 939 East 11th (1987), 2139 East 34th (1985) and 3657 West 15th (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3420 East 28th, 3213 Main, 720 Richards and 1321 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Andersens
Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Andersen name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.
We're opening orders soon. Join the list to be first in line; we expect about $29 a family.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
